DUPONT CIRCLE is located in the "Old City" of Washington, D.C. planned by Pierre L’ Enfant and remained largely undeveloped until after the Civil War. The area that now comprises Dupont Circle was previously home to a brickyard and slaughterhouses. Improvements made in the 1870s by a board of public works transformed the area into a fashionable residential neighborhood. In 1871, the Army Corps of Engineers began construction of the traffic circle, then called Pacific Circle, as specified in the L'Enfant plan. In 1882, Congress renamed the circle "Dupont Circle", in recognition of Civil War rear admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont. In 1921, the current double-tiered white marble fountain replaced the statue The fountain was designed by Daniel French and architect Henry Bacon, and carved by Attilio Piccirilli and his five brothers. This same team, French, Bacon and the Piccirillis brothers, also designed and carved the Lincoln Memorial. Today Dupont Circle is a cosmopolitan neighborhood with some of Washington, DC's finest museums, historic homes and foreign embassies as well as a variety of ethnic restaurants, bookstores, and private art galleries. This neighborhood is the heart of Washington, DC’s nightlife and is considered a historic locale in the development of American gay identity. The current boundaries of Dupont Circle include a small historic residential section west of 16th Street roughly between Swann Street and Florida Avenue, called the Strivers Section. This was historically an enclave of upper-middle-class African Americans, many of them community leaders, and includes a row of houses on 17th Street owned by Frederick Douglass. The Circle itself continues to be a popular gathering place with park benches, chess players, locals and tourists alike enjoying the park-like setting with its unique fountain in the center. The DUPONT CIRCLE Red Line Metro station is a popular destination for anyone interested in the restaurants, bars, and distinctive shopping in both the Dupont Circle and Logan Circle neighborhoods. |
